How to set eyebolts and threaded rod into urethane
foam so they don't come out.
You may also use the same method to fix threaded rod into any
urethane sign so that it may be side mounted onto, or between posts.
DIAGRAM AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
- Choose eyebolts with an extended shank, 3 - 4 ins. will do for most sign blanks.
- Drill a hole into the sign blank where the bolt is to go; about half an inch less than
the length of the shank.
It is important that the hole be at least 20% wider
than the diameter of the shank
- Mix up enough epoxy resin adhesive to fill each hole 1/3rd. full.... Dribble it
in.
- Coat the thread and shank with adhesive and insert into the hole slowly, allowing any
excess air to escape without forcing glue everywhere.
- Screw the first 1/4 in. into the bottom of the hole . This will allow it to stand up
straight whilst the adhesive is curing. This should leave about 1/4 in. showing beneath
the eye.
- Wipe any excess off with a rag dabbed in acetone
or alcohol. [If the sign is already painted
be careful not to ruin the finish with the acetone]. Leave to set.
- Providing you have 100% coverage of the inside of the hole with adhesive
as well as 100% coverage of the shank it will never come apart under normal conditions.
Problems usually occur when the thread is touching the edge of the hole as this
creates a spiral of adhesive which with constant vibration from the wind will work
loose in a very short time.
NB The eye bolt in the diagram is shown inline with the
sign. this is for identification in the drawing only in normal circumstances it will
be perpendicular to the sign.
