When a piece of material is taken and the background is carved out using CNC router, an effect just like sandblasted signs where the carved letters appear to raise up from the sign is created. The difference being with a carved/routed sign is that the background would be smooth whereas with a sandblasted sign, the background is textured.
The other type of carving usually associated with CNC carving is v-groove letters carved into the face of the sign. This produces a beautiful carved sign that is both simple and elegant and just oozes class. This style of carving emulates the hand carved effect of quality carved signs from days gone by. This type of carved sign is often gilded with 23kt gold or other metal leaf to create simple but stunning signs. A carved or routed sign is often associated with professionals and upmarket restaurants etc., who want to convey the message that they have been there a long time, are going to be there for many more years and are a business one can trust.
In the sign industry it often refers to letters that are hand
carved into the signblank
to form a "v" groove or flat bottomed letter, leaving
the face of the hand carved sign smooth. Another way hand
carving signs are made is to remove the
background effectively leaving the letters raised. Usually with
signage the only sculpting that is done is in the form of a bas
relief. That is not to say fully 3D hand carved items are not used, it's just not so
common. If it's a full 3d hand carved item the temptation to
steal is great if it's within reach.

"V" Groove lettering created with a CNC router.
Just like the "V" groove letters created in hand carving, routed letters look very similar but are much more precise and cost a lot less than hand carving. With this type of sign a flat substrate has the letters carved into it and these are often gilded. These carved signs tend to be very simple and elegant, speaking volumes about the business they represent. These carved signs give the impression of a quiet and somewhat understated professionalism that has been around for a long, long time and plans to stay that way.
