COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What are the signs made of ?

We manufacture using two main materials, our standard range of sign blanks are cast from a high density urethane foam this is more than adequate for most requirements. However when something stronger or more impact resistant is needed for our vandal resistant signs we use a specially formulated  polyester resin with an additive to increase its strength and impact resistance. This has one drawback though it makes the blanks approximately 3 times heavier than the urethane ones. Making them more costly to ship and harder to install.

2. Do all of the signs look like sandblasted redwood?

No, but most of them do. The Kennington doesn't and the Musgrove Collection doesn't, and some of our future signs won't.

3. What types of paint should be used?

Any type of paint can be used, including automotive, Krylon, One Shot, oil based, latex etc. But be warned you should always put down 2 light coats of either the correct primer or your chosen top coat (or under-coat if applicable) before you put any heavy coats down. (you should never put heavy coats of paint on at all) Its a fact 3 or 4 light coats will dry quicker and give a better finish  than 2 heavy ones. If you insist on laying down to much of any solvent based paint you are asking for trouble. Especially with oil based paints , if its too thick it will skin over sealing the solvent inside it may feel dry to the touch but when you bump it or try to pull application tape away it will Be just like that famous bra ... It lifts and separates   THE PAINT FROM THE  SUBSTRATE.

4. What type of primer is on the signs?

The signs are primed with a polyurethane based primer which bonds to the sign at a molecular level and is receptive to any type of paint. ( in reasonable quantities)

5. Do the backs of the signs have to be painted?

The backs of our signs are not primed, because if you wish to make a two sided sign by gluing two signs together, or if the sign is to be glued to some other substrate. If they have primer on the surfaces to be glued, they may separate at a later date.
If you are using the signs as one sided,  you can use any primer on the back of the signs that is correct for the paint you intend to use as a finish coat.

6. How is the sign attached to the post, and how are the eyebolts put in?

Because there is no grain in the material, screw through the face with a galvanized decking screw. Put exterior filler over the screw hole  and rub over it gently with a toothbrush, inline with the woodgrain. Use a silicone adhesive between the back of the sign and the post.

Follow this link to find out how to hang signs.

7. What type of glue is used to make a double-faced sign?

We use 2 part epoxy adhesive, which comes in 24 hr, 45 minute or 5 minute. With the larger signs, i.e. Avon, Kennington and Carolina, we suggest that we do the gluing in-house, as we are set up to do it.

8. Can the signs be used outside ?

These signs are meant for outside use and  with good paint the sign will last indefinitely.

9. What are the best types and densities of urethane foam ?

In our opinion, for one off custom signs, Signfoam is the best. It usually has a density of 15-18 pounds per cubic foot. We use foam with a density of approximately 22lb to cast our signs in.There are other kinds of foam which can be bought to make one off signs and they are: Precision Board, Z Foam and Rock Foam.

10. What sandblast stencil do you use ?

When we make custom sandblasted signs, we use Anchor #116.

11. Are all of your signs sandblastable?

Most of our signs are sandblastable, but we do not recommend sandblasting  the Kennington, as we cannot guarantee a constant density on the main part of the sign (what we are saying is that you can sand blast it but turn down the pressure and back off. Generally there is a less dense area about 2" above the cross bar BE VERY CAREFUL).  If something unusual is needed, then 3D lettering looks really exceptional or blast another piece of foam and use it as an applique.

12.Are there CFC gasses produced in the manufacture of your products

No. At one time chemicals producing CFC gasses were used as blowing agents. This stopped about five years ago.

13. Do I need to take any special safety precautions whilst working with your products.

No. However as with any action producing dust or shavings you should always wear a mask and eye protection.
Please take it from one who worked with sawdust for just a few years before extraction machines were required,
that quick five minute job done with out a dust mask or respirator won't hurt you.....today. But later you will regret it a lot.
Even more if you smoke.
